The Lanzarote-born Carmela García obtains the Photography Culture Award of the Community of Madrid

The Lanzarote photographer Carmela García has obtained the Culture of the Community of Madrid Award in the category of Photography 2018. An exhibition of the artist’s work was precisely the one in charge of opening the warehouse after seven years closed.

Carmela García, born in Lanzarote, has been awarded along with other well-known personalities from the world of Spanish culture such as Irene Escolar in Theater, Cayetana Guillén Cuervo in Cinema, Juan Vidal in Fashion, Isabel Villanueva in Classical Music, Mayte Martín in Popular Music or Eduardo Barceló de Torres in Historical Heritage, among others.

In previous editions they have received this same prize in the Photography category of the “Madrid Community Culture Awards”, artists such as Miguel Trillo, Ricardo Cases, Joan Fontcuberta, Daniel Canogar, Cristina García Rodero, Alberto García Alix, Chema Madoz or Chema Conesa.

She is one of the Canarian artists with one of the most consolidated and recognized professional careers in our country, who has organized a solid and committed feminist discourse that seeks the need to rethink and transform the world.

After her photography studies in Madrid and Barcelona, ​​she started an artistic career starting in 1998. Her creations aim to make us question the stereotypes of the common images of women in society. In 2005 it was selected among the hundred best Spanish photographers in the list drawn up by Exit, something that confirmed the trend of increasing importance in the works produced in recent years.

His work can be seen in museums such as the Reina Sofía National Art Center Museum -Espacio Uno-, the Photography Center of Coimbra and the MUSAC in León, the CAAM in Gran Canaria or the IVAM in Valencia, as well as the collective exhibition The Real Royal Tryp or PS1 Contemporary Art Center of the MOMA (New York) curated by Harald Szeemann, among others.
