Lanzarote wines of 2018 considered “very good”
The Regulatory Council announced last Friday that the Lanzarote wines of the 2018 vintage have received the “very good” rating. This news was made known during the Vintage Qualification Act, held at the restaurant Qué Muac-Castillo de San José.
For the qualification of the 2018 vintage, the tasting committee, made up of 8 experts, evaluated on March 26 a total of 22 wines from the Denomination of Origin Wines of Lanzarote, from different wineries on the island. Among them were ten dry white Volcanic Malvasia, four reds, two pink, a dry white Diego variety, two semisweet Malvasia Volcanic, a white semi-dry, a semi-sweet white and a sweet Muscat of Alexandria.
Once tasted and analyzed, we proceeded to the addition and calculation of the median, with the final result of 12.5 points. This figure corresponds to the rating of “very good” according to the valuation system applied by the Regulatory Board.
Darío Pérez, technician of the Regulatory Council, addressed during the act the main characteristics of the vintage, highlighting that “despite being a fairly abundant harvest in production, it was a very difficult year in relation to the weather conditions. have many days with covered skies, small rainfall and, therefore, a fairly high humidity.This caused many attacks of Mildiu and, above all, Oidio (ash), so the wine growers had to be more attentive to be able to control these diseases, which ultimately reduced production. ”
In 2018, there was the effort of a total of 1,826 wine growers who worked over 1,854 hectares in Lanzarote. For its part, the 15 wineries attached to the Regulatory Board released to the market more than 2,300,000 bottles throughout the year 2018.
