Nuria Espert embarked with her presence on stage to the large audience that went to the Jameos del Agua to become obscured with her interpretation of the fundamental piece of Spanish poetry, Romancero Gitano.
How could it be otherwise, Espert did not disappoint and his recitation of verses that slid like heartbreaking sentences through his throat, generated a vacuum of silence and repose, also of reflection, in the auditorium seats.
Published 90 years ago, Romancero Gitano is a collection of poems seen as an Andalusian map, in which the Roman, Christian, Arab, Jewish and Gypsy are intertwined. “An antipintoresque, antifolklórico, antiflamenco book”, as Federico himself described it, with an enormous wealth of images and symbols in allusion to life and death, passion and violence, land and sky.
A highlight of the performance was when Espert recited the poem ‘Lanzarote. First stanza ‘, which Rafael Alberti wrote to “César Manrique, pastor of winds and volcanoes” during his visit to the island in 1979. Priceless.
