Lanzarote goes through its “revalidation” as a World Geopark

 In Canary Islands, News

During these days of July, two technical specialists from the UNESCO Geopark Network Gobal are visiting Lanzarote to evaluate the characteristics that have given the island and the Chinijo Archipelago a World Geopark.

The experts will visit all the places on the island to check, in the field, the geological heritage on which the project is based. They will also place the magnifying glass on cultural heritage, the development of local businesses, the participation of civil society, as well as the preservation of territorial identity.

Within the visiting program, the evaluators will hold meetings with the different structures that share equipment and are integrated into the Biosphere Reserve, as well as associations, interpretation centers and tourist centers, among others, to make the final assessment with objective criteria.

It should be remembered that the UNESCO World Geopark Lanzarote and Chinijo Archipelago obtained its designation in April 2015 and this year 2019, once four years have passed, it has to undergo its first revalidation process. The revalidations are a very important part of the evaluation of the quality of the Geoparks and allows to maintain with it the levels of excellence.
