Lanzarote will be the epicenter of awareness against plastic
During the past year 2018, Lanzarote and Menorca celebrated their XXV anniversary as Biosphere reserves. The two islands, together with the group of researchers from the Marine Sciences for Society, have created the ‘Zero Plastic’ working group in the World Network of Islands and Coastal Zone Biosphere Reserves.
Both Menorca and the island of Jeju (South Korea), as technical secretaries, have opted for this process of citizen science, together with the National Parks Autonomous Organization of Spain. The first reserves to join to work together against plastic are Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, Terres de l’Ebre, Komandosrki islands (Russia), Cat Ba (Vietnam), Sea area of the archipelago (Finland), Blekinge (Sweden), Isle of Man (United Kingdom), La Selle (Haiti), Ometepe (Nicaragua) and the Guanahacabibes peninsula (Cuba).
This collaborative method of knowledge in Biosphere reserves, based on the articulation of art and science, will be presented at the annual meeting of the World Network of Biosphere Reserves, Islands and Coastal Zones in South Africa, in September 2019; and in the next edition of MICRO in 2020 in Lanzarote.
United by collective responsibility and the desire to share the latest research results to stimulate a process of awareness and action, Marine Sciences for Society and the network of associated Biosphere reserves invite institutions, social entities and all citizens to participate in the construction of ‘Plastic Zero’ with the aim of reducing to the minimum expression the harmful consequences of the abusive use of plastic.
