‘The image you missed’, winner of the Best Film Award at the Muestra de Cine de Lanzarote
The Jury of the Film Festival of Lanzarote deliberated yesterday in an innovative way within the festivals and film shows at an international level. Instead of doing it behind closed doors, they did it publicly, in a movie theater where there were almost thirty people listening to the arguments and statements that led the jury to issue its ruling.
This form of deliberation was adapted to the proposals that since the eighth edition of the Exhibition have been intended to encourage: cinema as a collective and reflective experience.
After a brief presentation, in which all the members of the jury recorded the high quality of the selected films, they presented their different points of view. And after almost an hour of deliberation and analysis under the watchful eye of the public, the award went unanimously in ‘The image that you lacked’, by Donal Foreman.
The film compiles images recorded by Arthur MacCaig, a young American of Irish descent who ended up being the IRA documentarian in the 70s. Donal Foreman compiles this material, which portrays some of the most violent conflicts of the last half of the 20th century, and creates an intimate and reflective film about the longing for a father, the role of the family, desire and political commitment.
‘The image you missed’ competed for the Jury Prize, endowed with € 2,500, with another five films: ‘La casa lobo’, by Cristóbal León and Joaquín Coñiza; ‘Star’, by Johann Lurf; ‘Still recording’, by Saeed Al Batal and Ghiath Ayoub; ‘Trote’, by Xacio Baño; and ‘M.’ de Yolande Zauberman.
The three members of the jury for the eighth edition of the Lanzarote Film Festival were: Vanesa Fernández Guerra, director of ZINEBI, International Documentary Film and Short Film Festival of Bilbao; Francesco Clerici, filmmaker who won the International Critics Award (FIPRESCI) for The Hand Gesture; and Alejandro Krawietz, director of the MiradasDoc International Festival and Documentary Film Market, Tenerife.
In addition to the Jury Prize for Best Film, the members of the Jury also awarded a Special Mention to ‘La casa lobo’ by Joaquín Cociña and Cristóbal León. The Numax Prize was also awarded to the Syrian film ‘Still recording’, by Ghiath Ayoub and Mohammad Ali Atassi, an award that will facilitate its premiere in Galician galleries.
