The shortness of the new moments
At first glance, at the time of occupying the chair, the stage of the Victor Fernández Gopar Theater ‘El Salinero’ was already invaded by a sort of geometric maremagnum. Cubes of various sizes, arranged in random shapes, under the gloom welcomed the attendees of the performance of ‘Once again a short moment’, a co-production between the Balearic company La Mecànica and the French company Thèatre du Movement.
Almost without realizing it, the cubes become as protagonists as the three characters of the work. The three men navigate between genres, not allowing us to classify what they do in not one of the theatrical genres. Three men in a tie struggle to stay afloat in a dark sea, defying gravity with acrobatics and ringlets and using the cubes and planks they have at their disposal for such a large undertaking.
When they accomplished it, not without sweat, they discover a paper in the shape, of course, fo a cube. That’s when the three protagonists focus all their efforts on deciphering what that mysterious page tries to tell them. Contemporary dance, the use of mimicry, rhythmic gymnastics movements … All accompanied by accurate acrobatics and a sense of humor that does not need words, as the invented words that narrated their adventures pulsed the trigger of the imagination of each of the spectators
That individual shot is what created a whole in each of the minds. The downside, surely, is that for those more rational viewers and less given to enjoy the art for the art without the need of an explanation, the work could have cost them a few yawns.
‘El Salinero’ could enjoy a play that oozed love for the theater: gestural, harmonious and dreamlike. When the protagonists manage to don the jacket that completesdtheir dress, the fight begins with the tsunami of blank papers in which their day to day has become. Everything balanced in a poetic way for the enjoyment of adults, but also of the youngest ones. A chaotic universe that is a delight. Not for nothing this work was awarded as the Best Show at the European Performing Arts Fair in 2016.
