The Cumbres de Famara, one of Lanzarote’s richest natural enclaves, are back on the national map thanks to the ecological restoration project carried out in the area, which has been selected as a finalist in the Europa se Siente Verde category of the national Europa se Siente competition. The initiative was chosen from among 54 entries linked to environmental restoration and the fight against climate change.
With more than 350 endemic species present in Famara, the project has carried out comprehensive conservation work based on the collection of seeds from 40 species and the production of more than 10,000 specimens of native flora. These actions not only strengthen the island’s biodiversity, they also turn the enclave into a pilot site for future restoration programmes in the Canary Islands and across the Macaronesian region.
The proposal combines applied science, bioengineering and environmental education, with strong social involvement. Through the participation of the education community, various public and private bodies, and the logistical support of the Air Surveillance Squadron (EVA-22), a model of intervention has been achieved that brings together scientific knowledge and citizen action.
Being named a finalist in this national competition highlights a project that goes beyond Lanzarote, becoming a replicable example for other natural areas in the archipelago. The restoration of Famara shows how cooperation between science, society and the land can safeguard fragile ecosystems and move towards a more sustainable future.
