The Cabildo of Lanzarote, through its Heritage Department, has announced the creation of virtual archaeological collections, with the aim of bringing them closer to the island community. A total of 3,522 records will be available to view on the website of the Fondo Arqueológico de Lanzarote (Lanzarote Archaeological Collection).
In 2014, the Heritage Service of the island's Cabildo began the first work on inventorying and cataloguing the archaeological collections. This first phase concluded the following year with a total of 1,478 items catalogued, including excavation reports, studies of materials and plans, among others. From then on, annual cataloguing campaigns have been carried out without interruption from 2016 to the present day.
The work carried out has mainly consisted of ordering and numbering the archaeological collections. But the opportunity has also been taken to photograph the items, replace both the old bags and the labels that were in poor condition, pack the materials correctly and store them in rigid boxes, following technical conservation criteria.
