The Cabildo of Lanzarote has approved the creation of a cenotaph in memory of the Mahos, the island’s first inhabitants. The initiative, which received unanimous backing, seeks to pay tribute to Lanzarote’s history and cultural identity through a monument that will be installed in the municipality of Tinajo.
The project aims to involve the public in the design and meaning of the cenotaph, with the goal of making it a landmark for the island’s cultural tourism and a place of remembrance and recognition for Lanzarote’s indigenous heritage.
The municipality of Tinajo has historically been a key enclave for preserving the island’s identity, hosting initiatives to recover Canarian heritage, traditions and folklore. This new monument reinforces its role as a point of reference for spreading the history of the Mahos and their legacy in Lanzarote.
