The Cabildo of Lanzarote, through its Historical Heritage Service, is launching the ‘Cuentos de los abuelos canarios’ (Tales of the Canarian grandparents) project, a pioneering initiative in the Canary Islands that seeks to conserve and share the richness of the oral memory of the elders of Lanzarote and La Graciosa. The initiative focuses on recording sound archives with testimonies, stories and expressions that form part of the island's cultural heritage, with the aim of preserving this intangible heritage and making it available to new generations.
The archives gathered will not only reinforce active listening and respect towards older people, but will also offer visitors an authentic insight into Canarian identity. These materials will be shared in museums, tourist offices, visitor centres and educational spaces, and will also come with specific teaching resources for primary and secondary schools, thereby integrating the oral legacy into school learning.
The project will be carried out by the Charter 100 Canarias Association of Businesswomen, Entrepreneurs, Professionals and Executives, which will collaborate in collecting, producing and showcasing the testimonies. With this, Lanzarote becomes a benchmark in protecting an intangible heritage that reflects not only the fragility of the passing of time, but also the strength of a shared cultural identity.
