The Teguise Historical Archive has recovered one of its most valuable documents: the Libro de Quintos (military conscription register) of 1763-1764, an eighteenth-century item that is available once more following a restoration process carried out by the Cabildo of La Palma's Centre for the Conservation and Restoration of Graphic Documents. The intervention has made it possible to halt the document's deterioration and to guarantee its conservation for future generations.
Work of this kind is essential in preserving documentary heritage, particularly in a territory where environmental conditions accelerate the wear and tear of historical materials. In the absence of a specialist centre in Lanzarote, Teguise Town Council has for years maintained a collaboration with the La Palma institution, whose laboratory has become a benchmark in the Canary Islands for the restoration of old documents.
The joint work between the two administrations has not only made it possible to recover this book, but also opens the door to new lines of cooperation to continue protecting the municipality's historical holdings. In this context, the formalisation of a technical agreement is already being considered, one that would strengthen this collaboration and facilitate future interventions.
To coincide with the document's return, a first-aid workshop for old books and documents was also held, as part of the Las tardes del Archivo project, an initiative that seeks to bring the value of documentary heritage closer to the public and to encourage its conservation.
The Teguise Historical Archive thus continues to consolidate its work as custodian of the island's memory, highlighting documents that allow the social and administrative history of Lanzarote to be reconstructed.
