The Feria de Artesanía de Lanzarote returns to Mancha Blanca from 10 to 15 September with more than 140 participants, including artisans, groups and organisations, a larger presence than at last year's edition. The fair reaches its 37th edition this year and will also have Uruguay as guest country, strengthening its international presence at one of the island's major September events.
One of the main new features will be a special exhibition devoted to sombreras and sombreros (traditional women's and men's hats) made from plant fibres from Lanzarote and La Graciosa. The display will show the techniques and the making process behind these pieces, historically linked to work in the fields and now one of the most recognisable elements of the island's crafts.
Artisans at work, live
The programme brings back the La Herencia en las manos space, which will gather around ten veteran Lanzarote artisans to give live demonstrations of different crafts. They will be joined by eight professionals specifically tasked with running workshops and educational demonstrations over the fair's six days.
Music will also feature prominently in the programme, with parrandas and a range of musical performances. Among them is the premiere of Acatife, ecos de la mujer, a show conceived as a tribute to the role played by women in Lanzarote society.
The 37th Feria de Artesanía opens its doors on Thursday 10 September, at 5:30 pm. From Friday 11 to Tuesday 15 September, the fairground can be visited from 10:30 am to 9:30 pm.
Workshops round off the offering for those who want a hands-on approach to different techniques and crafts. Registration opens on Monday 7 September, at 9:00 am, through Artesanía Lanzarote.
