The Cabildo de Lanzarote, through its Área de Cultura, presents its September programme, a month that brings together some of the most recognisable events on the island's cultural calendar alongside new proposals in music, performing arts, outreach and contemporary creation. The agenda spans different municipalities and cultural venues, with activities aimed at a wide range of audiences and interests.
The Feria de Artesanía de Lanzarote will once again turn Mancha Blanca into a meeting point for makers and artisans from across the archipelago, while Arrecife en Vivo will hold three of its dates in September. The programme also features the Festival Tensamba, the Encuentro Folclórico Nanino Díaz Cutillas, the Festival de Ópera de Lanzarote and a range of theatre and dance, along with talks, meetings and creative activities. we want the public to find many different ways to approach and enjoy culture”.
Feria de Artesanía de Lanzarote
From 10 to 15 September, Mancha Blanca will once again become a meeting point for artisans with the Feria de Artesanía de Lanzarote, one of the sector's benchmark events in the Canary Islands. The fair will bring together a broad range of crafts and makers, coinciding with the fiestas of Nuestra Señora de Los Dolores.
Every year the fair offers a great showcase for discovering and buying handcrafted pieces, as well as getting a closer look at the work and creative processes of professionals from Lanzarote and elsewhere in the archipelago.
Music
Music opens September with the meeting between Brazilian singer-songwriter and guitarist Leo Minax and Argentine pianist Germán Kucich, who perform on the 4th at El Almacén as part of the Festival Tensamba, with a set that fuses Brazilian song and jazz. Canarian roots music takes over on 11 September with the Encuentro Folclórico Nanino Díaz Cutillas, which will bring isas, folías, malagueñas and other sounds of the archipelago's folklore to Mancha Blanca for the Los Dolores fiestas.
On 19 September, Lanzarote Ensemble will take Stabat Mater, la lírica divina to the church of San Roque in Tinajo, a programme devoted to the versions of this work composed by Antonio Vivaldi and Giovanni B. Pergolesi. They are joined by Arrecife en Vivo, which will hold three dates in September, on the 5th, 18th and 25th, with its usual mix of local, national and international bands and different musical styles on the streets of the capital.
Theatre and dance
The performing arts arrive in September with shows that move between cabaret, dance, zarzuela and contemporary theatre. On the 11th, the Auditorio Cueva de los Verdes hosts Lancelot 28º-7º, a surrealist cabaret that brings the world of Agustín Espinosa to the stage through music, humour and a contemporary outlook. On 19 September, the Casa Museo del Campesino will be the setting for Campesina, Campesina, a contemporary dance piece inspired by Canarian dances and by the figure of the Lanzarote campesina (peasant woman), portrayed through two generations of women.
Also on 19 September, the Teatro Municipal de Tías will host La verbena de la Paloma, one of the most emblematic works of the género chico, as part of the Festival de Ópera de Lanzarote and with the participation of the Compañía de Zarzuela del Atlántico and the Orquesta Sinfónica del Atlántico. The programme closes on the 26th at the Teatro Víctor Fernández Gopar «El Salinero» with Supersaurio, by Ángulo Producciones, an adaptation of Meryem El Mehdati's novel that uses humour, irony and music to address the contradictions of a society marked by the pursuit of success and by precarity.
Talks and lectures
On 10 September, El Almacén will host the round table Patrimonio arquitectónico y arte urbano en Canarias, moderated by Mare Cabrera and featuring Marta González, Paula Calavera and Elena García, of Espacio Lapanera. The discussion will explore different perspectives on the archipelago's architectural heritage and its relationship with new forms of artistic intervention.
The programme continues on 22 September with a conversation between artist Will Encarnación and curator Nira Cabrera about the artist's career and creative processes. On the 24th, Olga Antúnez will give the talk El otro lado de la mesa. Lo que las representantes necesitamos para poder venderte at the Escuela de Arte Pancho Lasso, focusing on how artistic representation works and on professional access to the audiovisual sector. Cristo Gil closes the month on 29 September at El Almacén with Las Venus de la Transición. Un recorrido por el cine del destape en España, an exploration of the phenomenon and of the image of women projected by this cinema during the 1970s.
Workshop
On 23 September, the Centro Cívico de Playa Honda will launch Bernardas, a stage-creation lab directed and led by Siscu Ruz that proposes a process of theatrical exploration based on Federico García Lorca's The House of Bernarda Alba. The workshop will run until 24 November and will culminate in two performances open to the public on 26 and 27 November, showing the result of the creative process developed over the two months of work.
