Arrecife will celebrate another edition of San Juan night on 23 June with a programme combining music, popular food and one of the capital's most deeply rooted traditions: the tour of its neighbourhood bonfires. The initiative aims to reconnect different parts of the city on a day marked by fire, neighbourly togetherness and a welcome to summer.
Playa de El Reducto will be the main stage for the celebration, with activities from 18:00 that will include the traditional roast of corn cobs and sardines, musical performances, entertainment and the lighting of the great bonfire by the sea. This year they will be joined by an initiative allowing residents and visitors to discover the various bonfires organised in the capital's neighbourhoods.
To make taking part easier, a special guagua (local bus) service will run to several points around Arrecife, allowing people to visit different neighbourhood celebrations before ending the night at El Reducto. The initiative seeks to revive a custom that for decades was part of how San Juan was lived in the city, when many families would tour the neighbourhoods to share the festivities with friends and neighbours.
The programme will also include various complementary activities throughout the day, reinforcing the popular, participatory character of a celebration that every year draws thousands of people to the streets and public spaces of Arrecife.
