The island's capital is hosting a pioneering community initiative with the launch of "Arrecife Red Cultural de Barrios". This comprehensive programme aims to decentralise cultural and technological provision by bringing it directly into the heart of each neighbourhood, fostering community participation and, at the same time, revitalising the commercial fabric of the areas where activities take place. The project is backed by funding from the Vice-Ministry of the Presidency of the Gobierno de Canarias.
The programme prioritises mobilising residents of Argana Alta, Maneje, Valterra, Titerroy and Altavista, among other areas of the city. The goal is not only to offer free, high-quality artistic training for all ages, but also to generate footfall that brings streets and squares to life, supporting small shops and hospitality businesses in each neighbourhood. Commercial revitalisation actions will highlight local offerings, linking cultural events with spending in the immediate area.
Mobile unit and cutting-edge technology
To achieve this reach, an itinerant mobile unit will travel to participating neighbourhoods, acting as a beacon of creativity and technology. Residents will be able to experiment with virtual reality and artificial intelligence tools. This offer is complemented by a programme of masterclasses, open rehearsals and festivals that will become social and economic gathering points.
The programme demonstrates that culture can be a driver of urban transformation when it moves beyond conventional spaces and takes root in neighbourhoods. Arrecife Red Cultural de Barrios champions accessible, close-up culture with a real impact on residents' lives.
