Half a century ago, César Manrique turned an 18th-century fortress into the first contemporary art centre in the Canary Islands. The MIAC celebrates the anniversary with an exhibition that mixes historical documentation, works by artists who have shown in its galleries, and a site-specific installation by Canarian artist Pilar Llacer.
The show, occupying the east wing, reconstructs the castle's transformation: the original plans, photographs from the 1976 opening, correspondence between Manrique and the first management team. But this is no nostalgia trip. Curator Elena Cerrada stresses that the castle remains "an idea in motion" — a place where the dialogue between art, architecture and landscape keeps generating new questions.
The exhibition runs until September.
