The Cabildo de Lanzarote, through its Área de Cultura, presents its cultural programme for August, a schedule for enjoying the summer through events that combine music, cinema, performing arts, exhibitions and outreach activities. The programme keeps up its commitment to bringing culture to diverse audiences during the summer season.
Cruza la pasarela
El Almacén will host Cruza la pasarela, a show starring Pedro Ayose, Cristóbal Tabares and Mare Cabrera that takes a fun, nostalgic look back at the TV phenomenon of the early editions of Operación Triunfo, as a refreshing summer offering.
Through humour and pop culture, the show revisits the songs, the look and the icons that marked a whole generation, turning those shared memories into a light-hearted, participatory stage experience. The event is already sold out.
Music
The Tradición isleña circuit keeps touring Lanzarote in August with a programme devoted to traditional Canarian music in several of the island's municipalities. The performances take place on 15 August, with the Agrupación Altaja and the Parranda Lagar de Teseguite at the romería of the Fiestas Patronales de San Bartolomé, as well as a performance by the Agrupación Gaida in Nazaret.
The programme concludes on 16 August with a concert by the group Acatife at the Salón Social de Tinajo, as part of an initiative that continues to bring Canarian folklore and musical tradition to different stages across Lanzarote.
Cinema
The August film programme brings together two proposals that invite audiences to discover very different realities. On 27 August, Cine Juventud Lanzarote screens En un muelle de Normandía, by Emmanuel Carrère, an adaptation of Florence Aubenas's novel that addresses job insecurity and social inequality through the story of a journalist who goes undercover in the most precarious corners of the working world.
On 29 August, Cine Club Lanzarote presents the documentary Inadaptados: Rock & Roll desesperado, by José María de Páiz, coinciding with the Festival de Rock San Ginés. The session will be rounded off with a short film dedicated to Los Mayorets and a round table moderated by Jonás MF, in an event that champions the history of rock made in Lanzarote.
In addition, Cine ambulante de verano continues touring the island until 21 August with a varied film programme that revives the experience of old-time open-air screenings in several locations around the island.
Exhibitions
Throughout August, El Almacén keeps three exhibitions on display, which can be visited until 26 September. Antitemáticas, by Juan Arranz; Identidad, by Will Encarnación; and the video installation Arqueología del ciclo, by Atchen Pounapal, offer three different approaches to contemporary art through painting, installation and audiovisual creation.
The shows invite reflection on identity, transformation, memory and the relationship between human beings and their environment, consolidating El Almacén as one of the main spaces for exhibiting and promoting contemporary art in Lanzarote.
Guided tours
The Cultural Mediation programme coordinated by David Machado continues in August with new free tours of the exhibitions at the Casa de la Cultura Agustín de la Hoz and El Almacén. The initiative aims to share the keys to the contemporary art shows with the public through guided walkthroughs and spaces for dialogue.
The programme includes a tour of the Casa de la Cultura Agustín de la Hoz on 1 August, while El Almacén will offer new guided tours on 4 and 22 August, all free of charge and with no prior registration required.
