Until 16 July, the Casa de la Cultura Agustín de la Hoz in Arrecife is hosting the touring exhibition Geografía de las Resistencias LGTBIQ+ en Canarias, a project inviting visitors to explore the history of the LGBTIQ+ movement in the islands through photographs, historical documents, archive images and life stories.
Organised by the Dirección General de Diversidad of the Gobierno de Canarias and the Servicio de Igualdad, Violencia de Género y Diversidad of the Cabildo de Lanzarote (the island government), with the collaboration of Cultura Arrecife, the exhibition traces some of the most significant episodes in the community's recent history, focusing on the struggles, the spaces of resistance and the people who helped secure recognition of sexual and gender rights and freedoms in the Canary Islands.
Curated and researched by Jen Dávila Arencibia and Nerea López Cabral, the exhibition revisits milestones such as the memory of the former Tefía concentration camp, today recognised as a Site of LGBTIQ+ Democratic Memory, alongside testimonies from activists and key figures who played a fundamental role in the social transformation of the Archipelago.
The project also reflects on the repression suffered under the Franco dictatorship and on the evolution of the LGBTIQ+ movement up to the present day, offering a perspective that combines historical research, democratic memory and public outreach to bring audiences closer to an essential part of the recent history of the Canary Islands.
