The square in La Santa will host a new session of El Mentidero on Saturday 18 July at 10:30 am, a travelling project that seeks to recover the cultural and social use of public spaces through conversation, music, traditional games and bringing generations together. The activity is free and open to everyone.
The initiative invites people to enjoy the island's squares once again as places for meeting, conversation and participation, taking its inspiration from the old mentideros where neighbours would share stories and experiences. The day will begin with a talk given by older residents of the village, who will share memories and recollections of the town's past in an informal format, with no stage and no technology.
After this gathering it will be the turn of traditional outdoor games and, to close proceedings, an open parranda (traditional Canarian folk gathering) in which anyone can take part by bringing along their instrument to make music together. The aim is to recover simple ways of coming together that help pass on collective memory and encourage people to enjoy public space.
