The Cabildo de Lanzarote, through the UNESCO Global Geopark Lanzarote and Archipiélago Chinijo, has unveiled the programme for European Geoparks Week 2026, running throughout June with activities for all ages focused on celebrating the island's geological, cultural and landscape heritage.
The programme is part of a simultaneous celebration across more than a hundred territories within the UNESCO European Geoparks Network, aiming to promote geological heritage and strengthen the bond between communities and their natural environment.
A month of activities to discover the Geopark
Highlights include the craft workshop 'El legado de la roseta y la empleita', an initiative seeking to recover the history and value of a unique intangible heritage by teaching this traditional craft and adapting it to contemporary contexts. Sessions run on Saturdays 6 and 13 June, from 11:00 to 13:00.
Scientific outreach and landscape exploration play a key role through the 'Geoparqueando historias sobre el paisaje' programme, offering guided routes on 6, 7, 19 and 27 June, allowing participants to discover the island's geological features, geodiversity and cultural heritage. Meanwhile, the 'Ciencia ciudadana' sessions invite the public to investigate the importance of Lanzarote's underground ecosystems in a setting as unique as Jameos del Agua on 18, 20, 21, 27 and 28 June.
Documentary analysis and literature feature through 'Voces de volcán' on Friday 12 June, an oral narrative aimed at students and the general public that transforms the landscape and connects the stories of the territory through words. There will also be a presentation of 'El Jameo' magazine, a documentary legacy focused on understanding and protecting the island's knowledge, with a special focus on the historical eruptions of 1824.
The programme also encourages active participation through a participatory volunteering workshop, jointly promoted by the Geopark and the Biosphere Reserve, on 13 June at the Cabildo cafeteria, analysing the state of volunteering on the island and fostering dialogue between local authorities and citizens.
The photographic exhibition 'Lanzarote Geografía Humana' by Pep Salip will be on display from 19 to 30 June at El Aljibe de Haría. The show reflects, from an emotional perspective, the island's living landscape and the communities that shape it.
Events conclude on 28 June with 'Belingueo' in La Graciosa, in collaboration with Sonidos Líquidos. The gathering takes place in Caleta de Sebo as a sensory experience celebrating the cultural identity of the islands and respect for the conservation of the Archipiélago Chinijo environment.
