On Saturday 15 August at 7:30 pm, the Library of the Casa Museo José Saramago will host the presentation of the new editions of Morgana en Esmelle and Circe o el placer del azul, the two novels by Galician writer and journalist Begoña Caamaño, who is being honoured this year, 2026, on the Día das Letras Galegas. The event will feature Bea Caamaño, the author's sister, and María del Río, director of the Casa Museo José Saramago.
The presentation will be an opportunity to rediscover the literary work of one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary Galician literature. Originally published in 2009 and 2012, Circe o el placer del azul and Morgana en Esmelle have returned to bookshops this year, coinciding with the institutional recognition that Galicia is paying to Begoña Caamaño, whose career continues to attract growing interest among new generations of readers.
A journalist, writer and feminist activist, Begoña Caamaño (Vigo, 1964-2014) spent much of her professional career at Radio Galega, where she championed a journalism committed to rigour, public service and social change. At the same time, she was deeply involved in feminist, cultural and social movements, convinced that both journalism and literature were tools for understanding the world and helping to change it.
Her fiction consists of two novels that revisit some of the great myths of the Western tradition from a deeply contemporary, feminist perspective. In Circe o el placer del azul, Caamaño reclaims the figures of Circe and Penelope to question the Homeric narrative and give centre stage to women who build their own story through freedom, friendship and desire. In Morgana en Esmelle, the author enters the Arthurian world to reflect on power, ethics, justice and the possibility of building freer, more equal societies.
The event will offer a closer look not only at these two novels but also at Begoña Caamaño as a person and an intellectual, through the testimony of Bea Caamaño, the writer's sister, friend and representative, who will share personal memories and reflections on her literary, intellectual and personal legacy. She will be joined by María del Río, director of the Casa Museo José Saramago, who was also a friend of the author and shared with her time and the placer del azul in Lanzarote. The meeting will highlight the links between Caamaño's thinking and Saramago's: a commitment to social justice, the defence of equality, critical thinking and the conviction that literature is a powerful tool for imagining other possible worlds.
The occasion will also carry a particularly symbolic meaning, as the official registration of the Fundación La Balsa de Piedra de Lanzarote will be announced publicly during the presentation. This new cultural initiative is inspired by the literary and humanist world of José Saramago and aims to promote projects of dialogue, cooperation and reflection between territories united by culture.
