The Festival de Ópera de Lanzarote 2026 continues its programme on 19 September at 7:00 pm with a performance of La verbena de la Paloma, one of the best-known zarzuelas in the Spanish repertoire, which the Compañía de Zarzuela del Atlántico will bring to the Teatro Municipal de Tías.
Organised by the Cabildo de Lanzarote y La Graciosa, through its Culture Department, and the Fundación Nino Díaz, this new date reaffirms their joint commitment to establishing the Festival de Ópera as a permanent space for opera and lyric theatre on the island, bringing quality productions to audiences and helping to spread Spain's musical heritage.
An essential work of zarzuela
With music by Tomás Bretón and a libretto by Ricardo de la Vega, La verbena de la Paloma is one of the key works of the so-called género chico and one of the most popular pieces of Spanish zarzuela. First performed at the end of the 19th century, it has lost none of its ability to connect with audiences thanks to its lively characters, its witty dialogue and a score that is part of the cultural memory of several generations.
Set in the traditional Madrid of the street fairs, the work combines humour, jealousy, romance and popular life to offer a portrait of an era that remains fully relevant on stage. Its balance of entertainment, musical quality and theatrical richness has made it one of the essential titles of the Spanish lyric repertoire.
Canarian talent on stage
The performance will be given by the Compañía de Zarzuela del Atlántico, with Leopoldo Falcón as stage director and Isabel Costes as artistic and musical director, together with the Orquesta Sinfónica del Atlántico. It is a production developed in the Canary Islands by professionals closely connected to the archipelago's music scene, and it helps to promote and spread the Spanish lyric repertoire from a contemporary perspective.
Tickets for the performance are now available through Ecoentradas. The Festival de Ópera de Lanzarote is organised by the Cabildo de Lanzarote y La Graciosa and the Fundación Nino Díaz. It is sponsored by the Gobierno de Canarias, with the collaboration of the Ayuntamiento de Tías.
