On 10 and 11 June the Cine Buñuel at El Almacén will screen Un amor, the acclaimed film by Isabel Coixet based on the novel of the same name by Sara Mesa. The film, one of the most notable Spanish productions of recent years, offers an uncomfortable, profound look at emotional need, isolation and complex human relationships in a rural setting laden with tensions.
The story
The story follows Nat, a young woman who decides to leave her life in the city and settle in a small village in inland Spain. What begins as a search for peace and a chance to start again soon becomes an experience marked by a failure to communicate, the mistrust of her neighbours and a series of decisions that will force her to confront her own emotional limits.
Literature and cinema
The screening forms part of the programme of the literary encounter Verbena, strengthening the link between literature and cinema through the adaptation of one of Sara Mesa's most talked-about novels. With her customary visual sensitivity, Coixet builds a tale as disturbing as it is fascinating about human vulnerability and the need to find somewhere to belong.
